About the Photo Workshop

This workshop equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to operate safely in high-risk and complex environments. It draws on the expertise of Mathias Heng, a photojournalist whose career has taken him into conflict zones, disaster sites, and communities enduring poverty and struggle. His powerful images highlight human resilience in the face of adversity. Most recently, Mathias has been covering the war in Ukraine, documenting the impact of conflict on civilians and the human cost of war.

Alongside him is Grant Rayner, a crisis management and travel security specialist with over three decades of field experience. His career began with 13 years in the military, serving in infantry, special operations, and intelligence roles. He then transitioned into 23 years of security consulting, undertaking assignments in more than 25 countries. His work has included crisis planning, evacuations, and guiding organizations to operate safely in volatile environments.

Participants will explore risk assessment, preparation, street-level fieldcraft, vehicle-based operations, information security, and working effectively with local guides and fixers. Interactive discussions encourage sharing experiences, creating a collaborative and practice-driven learning environment.
